- "Haiti News." Times Topics - The New York Times. The New York Times, 26 Oct. 2011. Web. 01 Dec. 2011. <http://topics.nytimes.com/top/news/international/countriesandterritories/haiti/index.html>.
- The author of this article was not mentioned.
- The main topic of this article is the history behind the economics, political regime and subsequent turmoil, and culture of the Haitian people, especially in relation to its dealings with natural disasters.
- The main argument presents historical data on rocky politics and poor economy due to over-farming and mismanagement of resources. It is mostly factual accounts of different political leaders and corruption that they allowed.
- (a) “One of the poorest and least developed countries in the world, Haiti in recent years has struggled with problems ranging from near-constant political upheaval, health crises, an annual barrage of hurricanes and the worst earthquake in the region in more than 200 years.” (b) “Despite bouts of optimism brought on by the implementation of a new constitution and the first peaceful transfer of power between two elected presidents in the nation’s history, Haiti’s politics in the post-earthquake era remain as tumultuous as ever.” (c) “[Haiti] has staggered under the combination of food riots, government instability and a series of hurricanes that killed hundreds and battered the economy…”
- This article supports my argument that the state of Haiti before the earthquake in 2010 directly affected the country’s ability to respond. And also many of the difficulties experienced by aid teams and recovery help was due to mismanaged government and policies prior to the disaster.
- I used facts on the history of Haiti under the Cultural Facilitators section and also used a photo from the article in my collage.
